Welcome to Support Religious Liberty

2013 Update:

This site was developed to support efforts in 2012 to oppose the HHS ‘abortion mandate.’ In 2013, the struggle has moved into the courts, for the most part. On August 1, 2013, however, certain temporary exemptions for religious-affiliated organizations will expire. In addition, the Administration is conducting a further rulemaking that may circumvent the "grandfather" status presently enjoyed by some religious organizations. Thus it may become necessary to return the debate to the “public square.” In that case, this site will likely become more active again. Meanwhile, the site remains on-line to provide background information on this issue and occasional updates.

In the meantime, a Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/SuReLiberty posts updates and relevant articles. Facebook users may “like” this page to receive these updates.

There are currently approximately 60 lawsuits seeking injunctive relief from the mandate. About half of these are filed by non-profit organizations and half by for-profit businesses. Many of these have resulted in temporary injunctive relief. A few have moved to the appellate level, with differing results in various Appellate Circuits … for this reason, it is likely that at least some of these will be reviewed by the Supreme Court “soon.” The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty maintains a webpage at https://www.becketfund.org/hhsinformationcentral/ with updated, detailed information on each of the pending lawsuits.

As you have surely heard, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has mandated that all1 health plans include coverage of “certain preventive health services.” These "services" include contraceptives and abortion-inducing drugs. This new rule violates the consciences and beliefs of many Christians and the teachings of many Christian churches.

In the wake of widespread outrage, on February 10 the administration announced an “accommodation” that allows church-related institutions such as hospitals and schools to avoid listing these services in their policies. However, their insurance carriers will be required to provide these services to each person covered by the policies at no additional charge and with no “co-pay.” The “accommodation” changes nothing.

Our Support Religious Liberty grassroots effort is a response to calls from many religious leaders to stand against this assault on Freedom of Religion and Freedom of Conscience.
